Simran in Hari’s ‘SevalÂ’

Forget Simran’s categorical statement that she would not act in any roles other than heroine roles.  Following a supportive role in Gautham Menon’s ‘Varanam Aayiram’, she is donning another supportive role in Hari’s ‘SevalÂ’, featuring Bharath and Poonam Bhajwa in the lead roles.







Though it is a supportive role, it is said to be a very strong role that could make more impact than that of heroine’s role.  Insiders say that it would be similar to the role of Nadiya in Hari’s ‘ThamirabharaniÂ’.


Hari actually approached Simran with a lot of hesitation, as she had recently declared that she would take up only the lead roles. But Simran accepted to act in his film after hearing the story. The salary package for Simran is said to be a whooping amount.


So, the erstwhile Kollywood queen Simran has finally made a comeback, albeit in a different form.

அஜித் அவ்வளவுதான் என்று சொன்னவர்களுக்கு பில்லா சரியான பதிலடி கொடுத்திருக்கிறது. பில்லாவுக்கு முன் அஜித் கொடுத்த கடைசி ஹிட் ‘வரலாறு’.
அதன்பிறகு வந்த ‘ஆழ்வார்’, ‘கிரீடம்’ இரண்டும் பாக்ஸ் ஆபிஸில் சொல்லும்படியான வெற்றியை பெறவில்லை. அதிலும் ‘ஆழ்வார்’ எதிர்பாராத படுதோல்வியை சந்தித்தது.

அஜித் அவ்வளவுதான் என்று ஆளாளுக்குப் பேசத் தொடங்கியதுபோது பில்லா புராஜெக்ட் டேக் ஆஃப் ஆனது. ரீ- மேக் படம், அதுவும் ரஜினி நடித்தது. அஜித் அதில் என்னச் செய்யப் போகிறார் என ஏளனமும், எதிர்பார்ப்பும் சரிவிகிதத்தில் இருந்தது.

ஏளனத்தை முறியடித்து எதிர்பார்ப்பை நிறைவு செய்தது அஜித்தின் பில்லா. சில நடிகர்களைப் போல காசு கொடுத்து ஓட்டாமலே நூறு நாளை பில்லா கடந்திருக்கிறது.

‘சிவாஜி’க்குப் பிறகு அதிகம் வசூலித்தபடம் என்ற பெருமையையும்  பில்லா பெற்றிருக்கிறது. சென்னையில் மட்டும் ஏறக்குறைய ஐந்து கோடி ரூபாய் வசூலித்துள்ள இப்படம், தொடர்ந்து நூறு நாட்கள் டாப் டென்னில் இடம்பெற்று சாதனை படைத்திருக்கிறது.

அபூர்வ சகோதரர்கள், சதி லீலாவதி, தசாவதாரம் படங்களுக்கு ஓர் ஒற்றுமை உண்டு. கமல் நடித்தப் படங்கள் என்பதைத் தாண்டி இவை அனைத்தும், ஏற்கனவே வெளிவந்த படங்களின் பெயர்கள்.

Which are the two things you like best about yourself?

I think I’m very laborious and extremely committed to my profession. Those are the two things I like best about myself.

You were better seen as glam doll in Kollywood earlier? How did you deal with it?

When I did ‘Kuthu’, I was just a young teen of 16. I was absolutely naïve to the dealings of the industry and thus gave away to doing many such glam roles. That’s when I realized that I was getting bore doing such stereotype roles time and again. At that time, offers started pouring in from Kannada and I was quick to shift my attention there. Till today, I’m trying to break those glamorous shackles around me.
 
So do you think that there’s any harm in doing glamorous roles?

Not really. But then, now I’m more inclined to doing performance-oriented films and work with more established directors. In Kannada I’ve done quite a few such films like Jothe Jotheyali, Amruthadhare and Meera Madhava Raghava that has won me a lot of applause. I want to continue in that trend.

You are back to Kollywood now and are creating waves here?

(Smiles) Yes. It was with Thoondil that I finally got back to Tamil films. After that I had signed quite a number of films including Gautham Menon’s Vaaranam Aayiram and Pollathavan.

Pollathavan went on to become a huge hit. How do you feel about that?

I’m extremely elated with the way things are shaping up for me. Pollathavan gave me an author-backed role that of a middle class simple girl, and I just loved playing my character. My next film Vaaranam Aayiram also presents me in an equally charming role. In fact that’s my dream role. I couldn’t have asked for more.
 
Would you like to brief us a bit on your dream role?

Well, I can’t divulge much at this point. All I can say is that I play a 14 year old in this film. This role was a real challenge but nevertheless I loved it. It gave me one huge scope to experiment with my looks, gestures, outfits, and everything else. It’s truly an adorable role. You guys are gonna love me in this role. This is one role I’m gonna forever cherish doing.

So now that you back in Kollywood, are you eyeing the top slot again?

Not really. Actually I’ve never been so competitive. Now that I’m back, I intend to take up important projects rather than settling down with everyday kind of roles. I’m just eying good scripts for now.

When a director decides to launch a high profile youngster as an action and romantic hero with a typical and clichéd ‘masala’ film, there is little that you could expect from the film in terms of finesse and content.

Director A. Venkatesh, who is known for formulaic masala flicks, has come out with a story that is split in to two parts as romance and thriller. While the first half deals with the romantic track, the second half is dedicated to the thriller element filled with abduction drama and the bomb threat.

The story has nothing new to write about. A happy-go-lucky youth (Sivaji, the grand son of Sivaji Ganesan) wants to become an SI in police department. Since the first scene itself shows you that he has become an SI, there is no suspense or drama in the run up to reach the position. Yet the movie tries to hold your attention by telling you in the beginning that the hero, heading to his home town Madurai after getting the appointment order, is in for a big danger in Madurai.

Instead of going ahead to narrate the danger, the movie goes back to the past of the boy to tell you his background.

It is a typical lower middle class family in Madurai, with a mother (Saranya in a familiar role) and a sister pouring affection on the protagonist. The mother wants him to become a police officer and the boy is on the right track to make her dream a reality.

Meanwhile he gets into trouble by seeing a beautiful girl (Gowri Minjal) but end up winning over her heart after some heroic fights. He even gets the nod from the rich father of the girl but his mother wants him to get married only after becoming an SI. Then he goes to Chennai where he gets his appointment order after completing an adventurous mission. He is now heading to Madurai as a happy person, who has fulfilled his mother’s desire. 
When everything seems to be alright, a new villain emerges and makes the life hell for the hero. The hero is put into a disastrous mission by the villain. He cannot refuse to do that, as his mother, sister, and the lover are in the clutches of the villain, who seems to have a well knit network.

The rest of the movie says how the protagonist succeeds in saving his family and millions of people.

Though there is no point in pointing out the loopholes and flaws in the script, as the director has made it clear that he wants to make a masala and nothing else, certain absurdities cannot be left without being mentioned. The scene the lovers go out for an outing, in which the girl is found ‘missing’ is ridiculous. What happened to their cell phones, through which they could have sought help from others? How come the father takes his daughter without the knowledge of the boy, who was sleeping near by?
 
You can keep on raising many questions regarding the ‘bomb’ episode and the climax in which the hero does everything within 20 minutes. How does the father of the girl accept the boy, who jumps into fights just at the drop of a hat?

The director, however, has executed a few scenes before and after the intermission point well. The mystery over the new villain is maintained well up to some extent. He has also succeeded in projecting the young Sivaji as a potential hero material.

Sivaji, the grand son of legendary actor Nadigar Thilagam hasn’t tried to make an entry as his grand father did fifty six years ago. In other words, the young Sivaji hasn’t attempted to ‘act’ or tried to establish him as a performer. It seems he has tried to be known as a mass hero, who dances, fights, and romances. He has made some impact in all these departments but he has to pay more attention on his body language and facial expressions, which dilute his efforts up to some extent.

Gowri Munjal, who made her entry in to Kollywood in ‘Thottal Poo Malarum’ (the launch pad of another young hero, Sakthi), does perfectly what is expected from her – providing glamour to the film. She looks good – excepting in some close up shots that betray the wrinkles in her face – and oozes sex appeal with ease.
 
Vivek’s comedy track involving actress Malavika, doesn’t pass muster. His one-liners have become predictable. The comedian must think something new to maintain his position in the field. Smart looking Malavika, appearing as Malavika, sizzles in a song.

One wishes that Saranya gets some new roles to perform. Avinash as the father of the girl looks majestic but fails to impress in a half backed character. Anal Arasu and Guna as villains impress with their credible performances.

Music by Prasanna Sekar is one of the plus points of the movie. All the tunes are hummable with the enticing ‘Enda Ratchasa’ standing out.

Stunts (Kanal Kannan and Anal Arasu), cinematography (R.D Rajasekar), choreography (Brinda and Tharunkumar), and editing (Antony) have added strength to the movie.

Overall, ‘Singakkutty’, though lacking finesse and coherence, has the ingredients to become a hit and it could prove to be a decent launch pad for the young Sivaji.

Vaitheeswaran

The theme of rebirth and reincarnation seems to be reigning high in tinsel town now. First it was Shah Rukh Khan’s Om Shanthi Om, followed closely by Sila Nerangalil. The latest to join the bandwagon is Vaitheeswaran, directed by debutant Vidhyadharan.

The story is very simple. While on his mission to plunder jewels from a temple, Sayaji Shinde kills a small boy who happens to spot him. Being a witness to this dastardly act and at the same time powerless to counter Sayaji (because of his clout), the boy’s mother vows that Sayaji will be killed by her son in his next birth after thirty years on a new moon day. The rest of the film deals with the fears and trepidations of Shinde, and how he goes about combating his death threat. Will Shinde be killed as per the curse?
 
 
Talking about performances, Sarathkumar as the psychiatrist has allowed the director to completely mould his performance. He looks much younger and has delivered a very cool and nonchalant performance. In fact among his recent releases, this film showcases Sarath in a fresh and revitalized fashion. Meghna Naidu seems to have understood what is expected from her and has followed a liberalization policy with her costumes! Her glamorous looks is one of the selling points of the movie. Manobala and Santhanam provide the comic relief while Sayaji has put in an earnest performance. As the astrologer, veteran Vijaykumar delivers the goods perfectly.
The pre-interval session of the film proceeds linearly on track, but the first twenty minutes post interval is a little grueling for the audience. However, the film picks up momentum soon after. Reincarnation is a widely debated issue, evincing varied opinions. But this aspect has been discussed in the film back and forth and the director’s apprehension on which side to fall is clearly evident. A unique feature of the film is that the hero meets the villain only in the climax sequence. The twists and turns of the movie are enjoyable to an extent.
 
Srikanth Deva’s music is ordinary. But what is different about the songs is that there are only two. Both songs feature a very sexy Meghna Naidu. Cinematography and editing are just passable.

Bommalattam

It is now the season of film directors from Tamil cinema making merry at the Bollywood. Joining the long list of directors venturing to do Bollywood movie is veteran Bharathiraja. He has directed Nana Patekar for a gripping thriller titled Cinema. The movie is simultaneously being released in Tamil as Bommalattam.

Bharathiraja and Nana Patekar have worked together tirelessly for over a year to complete the movie.

Nana Patekar, whom Bharathiraja considers a different actor, plays the lead role of a director in the film. It may be recalled that Bharathiraja, who is acclaimed as a trendsetter in Tamil cinema with several hits under his belt and introduced many actors and actresses, made his debut in Bollywood with a Hindi film called Lovers, a re-make of Tamil original Alaigal Oyvathillai, which was released in 1983.

Cinema is remade in Tamil under the title Bommalattam meaning Puppet Show.

Nana has the reputation of being a difficult actor to work with, but veteran Tamil director Bharathiraja does not seem to have had any major problems working with Patekar.

The movie, titled ‘Bommalattam’, is almost complete and is likely to see the light of the day soon.

In the flick, Nana plays a film director who runs into problems both in his reel and real life. He seems to have done a good job of it considering the praise Bharathiraja has lavished on the veteran actor.

Arjun reportedly plays a tough cop who is behind Nana Patekar in the movie. Kajal Agarwal plays an actress in the film.

Ace Bollywood music-composer Himesh Reshmaiayya has scored music for the movie. He has come up with five peppy numbers which are sure to floor the music-lovers.

Known to bridge a gap between rural-urban themes in his movies, Bharathiraja has got the best out of the artistes in the movies.

“Cinema, which throws light on the real life of the reel artistes, should set a new trend in the industry’, opines Bharathiraja.

Having been in the industry for over three decades, Bharathiraja, who had won several national and Tamilnadu State awards, is pinning a lot of hopes on the movie.

“All my artistes have contributed their best.  But for their unstinted support, the movie could not have bee completed”, he says.

Bomallatam is getting ready for an early release.

Bhavana changes interest?

Bhavana’s career is shaping up well with the lady doing films in all the south Indian languages except in Kannada. Presently she is committed to Jeyam Kondaan with Vinay in Tamil and Mulla in Malayalam. Close friends of the actor reveal that she has not accepted any other offer and is in Trichur now concentrating on something other than films. When
probed it was divulged that the pretty lady had bought herself an expensive violin and is taking violin classes from a reputed teacher in Kerala.

When questioned about this sudden change of interest from acting to playing violin, Bhavana says, “I am very much interested in music and I have wanted to learn some kind of instrumental music. As I like violin a lot, I am learning to play it too.” This actress sure does have an alternate profession.

Cheran prefers Padmapriya to Meera

Cheran’s Autograph was a great success with the classes and the masses alike. The screenplay and narration in the film was much talked about and earned the director many a plaudits. Pokkisham was the project which Cheran commenced after Autograph and a song was also shot with Meera Jasmine in the lead role. However the film was postponed due

to reasons unknown and the director went on to make Thavamai Thavamirundhu which again was accepted well by the audience.

Now Pokkisham has been dusted and kept ready for polishing but with a small change. This time around Cheran has brought in Padmapriya as heroine in place of Meera Jasmine. Grapevine in the industry reveals that Cheran is quite comfortable working with Padmapriya from Thavamai Thavamirundhu days and her subsequent performance in films like Mirugam and Sathum Podaadhay also helped the balance to tilt in her favor.

Asin’s next with Salman Khan?

Asin seems to be having limited but plum assignments in her kitty. She has been shuttling between Kollywood and Bollywood for the past few months for Dasavatharam and Hindi Gajini.

Meanwhile Murali Manohar who had produced films like Jeans and Arasatchi has plans to make ‘Modhi

Vilayadu’ with Vinay as hero and Charan as director. Simultaneously he will be funding a project in Hindi too with Salman Khan in the lead. It has been reported that Asin was approached to play the love interest of Salman Khan in the Hindi project. Looks like the Gajini girl may accept this as it would help her establish base at Bollywood. Reply from Asin is waited and we would keep you posted.
