Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

‘Marma Yogi’ is garnering every bit of attention ever since it was announced and the latest news is that the film will start shooting in October in Mumbai. The film will be directed by Kamal Haasan and stars Trisha, Shriya, Hema Malini and Venkatesh apart from the versatile actor himself. The film is to be made in Tamil, English, Telugu and Hindi simultaneously.

‘Dasavatharam’ opened across many theaters with mixed reviews but then has made it quite majestically to hundred days. Adding to this majestic appeal is the way ‘Marma Yogi’ is being planned.

Reports indicate that the Red Camera will be used and a Hollywood cinematographer has been roped in. Kamal Haasan and make-up are becoming synonymous these days and one can expect a flamboyant approach with this period film as well. A team of make-up specialists from Hollywood will be part of the team. A new technique called ‘Spray Make-up’ is being introduced to Indian Cinema with this film.

An extravagant Project Launch for the film is expected to take place in Mumbai after which shooting will commence. The team would fly to many parts of the world including Sweden and of course many parts in India. Set in the 7th century AD, ‘Marma Yogi’ is expected to showcase a slice of life as it happened then including the diction and social themes.

Kamal Haasan is known to be quite a perfectionist and with his experience, one can expect a stunning affair.

Another huge factor that has to be spot on for ‘Marma Yogi’ is the costumes part. Being a period film authenticity will have to be maintained in order to be accepted and Gauthami has been assigned this responsibility.

‘Phoonk’ – From Mumbai to Chennai via Hyderabad

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Ram Gopal Varma is one director who likes to experiment a lot. He started off his directorial journey as a master storyteller about gangsters and their shady lives. But the storyteller in him overwhelms every other aspect and so he has started to make many kinds of films. His latest however is ‘Phoonk’ – a Hindi language film that has the eerie presence of ghosts, a la the English film Poltergeist.

‘Phoonk’ has been remade in Telugu as ‘Raksha’ under the direction of Vamsi. The story has been altered a bit to make it more emotional. The latest news however is that ‘Raksha’ will be dubbed in Tamil and released soon.

It can be recalled that Ram Gopal Varma’s first film ‘Shiva’ starring Nagarjuna and Amala was dubbed and released in Tamil as ‘Udhayam’. The movie went on to become a great success.

Let’s see if the dubbed version of ‘Raksha’ can recreate the same success.

Charmi retuns to jolt audiences

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Actress Charmi, introduced by director Vijaya T Rajendher in Tamil cinema with Kadhal Azhivathillai, is back again after rocking Telugu audiences and a brief hiatus. She now plays the female lead in a horror flick titled ‘Manthra’.

Directed by Tulasiram, ‘Manthra’ has musical score by Anand. The movie features popular Telugu actor Sivaji opposite Charmi. ‘Manthra’ is about an aspiring pop singer, who goes into revenge mode in order to kill all those behind her friends’ murders.

Charmi says, ‘I enjoyed working in the movie for it has tremendous scope for glamour and action. At a time when hero-dominated films are the norm, an actress rarely gets an opportunity to work in such movies. I am confident ‘Manthra’ will help re-establish myself in the industry.’

Prasanna who has played a sophisticated Non Resident Indian in the film ‘Achamundu Achamundu’ will be seen as a Chennai slum dweller in his next film ‘Naai Kutty’. A rickshaw peddler spots the baby, names him Naai Kutty and raises him. The life of this abandoned baby as he grows up in a merciless and cold world forms the rest of the story.

The director of the film S. S. Joe, a former associate of Ram Subbu who churned out the film ‘Katrathu Thamizh’, was himself raised in the slums of Chennai and so is expected to bring out the emotional and social plight of slum dwellers with reality as the strength.

‘Naai Kutty’ is produced by V. A. Durai who had produced the films ‘Ennama Kannu’, ‘Looty’ and ‘Pithamagan’ earlier. Actress Nicole has been roped in as the heroine. A host of new comers are also part of the project. Music is by Sundar C. Babu.

Poorna is the actress who was introduced to Tamil filmdom through the film ‘Munuyandi Vilangiyal Moondramaandu’. Ever since Vijay said at the audio launch function of the film that Poorna looks like Asin and that she probably could become the next Asin, this petite actress from Kerala has been thirsting to thank Vijay personally.

A semblance of an opportunity came her way when she was called to take part in the shooting of an advertisement at the AVM Studios. Incidentally, Vijay was shooting for the film ‘Villu’ in the next floor. The actress whose original name is Kurikkal Kudiyil Shamna, raced to the next floor once her filming was over at 6 pm. But then our man had packed up by 6 pm and driven away home.

Though disappointed, Poorna is confident that she would get the opportunity very soon. Moreover she has plans to tell him personally that she has this innate desire to pair with him at least in one film.

Azhagan Thamizhmani – The show must go on

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Popular industrialist and filmmaker Azhagan Thamizhmani was slated to play a character in director Bala’s film ‘Naan Kadavul’. His character required him to grow a mustache and beard. Azhagan Thamizhmani, who had produced movies such as Solaikuyil and Sithiraipookal in the past, religiously grew his beard and mustache for a year.

Since ‘Naan kadavul’ starring Arya ran into many controversies, the film did not have a smooth sail as far as continuous production is concerned. Despite this snag the industrialist cum filmmaker waited patiently for his shots to be canned.

Unfortunately before the shooting could take place, his mother passed away. Hindu tradition requires the son to take off the mustache, beard and even tonsure the head before performing the last rites. But then to keep up his commitment with the film ‘Naan Kadavul’ Azhagan Thamizhmani didn’t shave off and went ahead with the last rites.

This sure is a big favor for the ‘Naan Kadavul’ team.
