It is now the season of film directors from Tamil cinema making merry at the Bollywood. Joining the long list of directors venturing to do Bollywood movie is veteran Bharathiraja. He has directed Nana Patekar for a gripping thriller titled Cinema. The movie is simultaneously being released in Tamil as Bommalattam.

Bharathiraja and Nana Patekar have worked together tirelessly for over a year to complete the movie.

Nana Patekar, whom Bharathiraja considers a different actor, plays the lead role of a director in the film. It may be recalled that Bharathiraja, who is acclaimed as a trendsetter in Tamil cinema with several hits under his belt and introduced many actors and actresses, made his debut in Bollywood with a Hindi film called Lovers, a re-make of Tamil original Alaigal Oyvathillai, which was released in 1983.

Cinema is remade in Tamil under the title Bommalattam meaning Puppet Show.

Nana has the reputation of being a difficult actor to work with, but veteran Tamil director Bharathiraja does not seem to have had any major problems working with Patekar.

The movie, titled ‘Bommalattam’, is almost complete and is likely to see the light of the day soon.

In the flick, Nana plays a film director who runs into problems both in his reel and real life. He seems to have done a good job of it considering the praise Bharathiraja has lavished on the veteran actor.

Arjun reportedly plays a tough cop who is behind Nana Patekar in the movie. Kajal Agarwal plays an actress in the film.

Ace Bollywood music-composer Himesh Reshmaiayya has scored music for the movie. He has come up with five peppy numbers which are sure to floor the music-lovers.

Known to bridge a gap between rural-urban themes in his movies, Bharathiraja has got the best out of the artistes in the movies.

“Cinema, which throws light on the real life of the reel artistes, should set a new trend in the industry’, opines Bharathiraja.

Having been in the industry for over three decades, Bharathiraja, who had won several national and Tamilnadu State awards, is pinning a lot of hopes on the movie.

“All my artistes have contributed their best.  But for their unstinted support, the movie could not have bee completed”, he says.

Bomallatam is getting ready for an early release.

Yaradi Nee Mohini

‘Yaradi Nee Mohini’ is the remake of a Telugu film titled ‘Adavari Matalaku Ardhale Verule’ starring Venkatesh and Trisha in the lead. The original version, which was a blockbuster, was directed by ace director Selvaraghavan.

‘Yaradi Nee Mohini’ has Dhanush and Nayantara in the lead roles. Mithran R. Jawahar, Selvaraghavan’s assistant director, directs the movie, while Selvaraghavan himself pens the script.

The film deals with a love story set in the backdrop of a young man’s complex over his shortcomings. It tells you the success of true and strong love.

Dhanush is a middle-class boy who repeatedly faces failure in his pursuit to get a job. Though he is qualified, he is lacking in communication skills and that costs him dear.

Dhanush, who is afraid of failures, is facing a tough time. To make things worse, his relationship with his father (played by Raghuvaran) is becoming bitter day by day.

Dhanush is frustrated. He needs a change, a big change indeed.

Enters Nayantara, the young and smart professional girl. Dhanush meets her and instantly falls for her. Soon, he luckily gets a job in a software company, in which he has to work beside his lover.

Nayantara however, refuses to accept his love and tells him that she is already engaged.

Dhanush finds himself in a state of distress and loss.

What happened to his love? Could he ever win the girl’s heart and redeem his life? What role his father has to play in his life?

‘Yaradi Nee Mohini’ has a gripping script with lot of twists and turns. The story is told in an entertaining and youthful manner. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music will be a real treat to the music lovers.

It is an important movie for both Dhanush and Nayantara, as they are very much keen in maintaining their success with their previous ventures (‘Polladhavan’ and ‘Billa’). Mithran R. Jawahar is working hard to make his debutant movie a memorable one.

‘Yaradi Nee Mohini’ is expected to hit the halls in the month of March.

Vambuchanda

Cast: Sathyaraj, Uday Kiran, Riyaz Khan, Diya, Raj Kapoor

Direction: Raj Kapoor

Music: D. Imman

Production: Jai Mataji Cine Combines

Five songs, an equal number of fights, throw in a little romance, a little glamour, a little sentiment, some slapstick and something that resembles a plot and there you have it- – a perfect formula movie. The ingredients remain constant but the only question to ask of Vambuchanda is if the script and the execution do enough to hold your attention through the movie. The makers haven’t tried hiding their obvious intentions at attempting a tried and tested mix for the nth time.

Vambuchanda begins as a love story, takes a detour about halfway through, and turns into a political tussle between two men that ends in tragedy, (with the eventual face off and payback). For fairly formulaic fare, Vambuchanda at times isn’t as predictable in spite of the regular irking clichés. Uday Kiran and Diya are in love and it is just like any other routine screen romance with generously distributed song and dance numbers. You settle into another run of the mill parents vs. lovers story but surprisingly their love finds acceptance. That’s when the story really takes off. Uday Kiran discovers that Livingston (who plays his dad) is really not his dad (twist #1) and that’s when Sathyaraj (at long last) enters as a mentally deranged old man. Flashback- to Sathyaraj’s days as a strict election officer whose tiff with a political kingpin played by Fefsi Vijayan ends with both of them losing their sanity. Now, do they regain sanity and go for each other’s throats or do their sons (Uday Kiran and Riyaz Khan) settle scores for their fathers? This is narrated to us through many distinctly melodramatic (sometimes passable, sometimes amusing and sometimes irritating) moments.

Sathyaraj’s role as the lunatic old man is as stereotyped as a mental patient’s character can be. The director tries to evoke a few funny moments at the expense of Sathyaraj through some contrived situations but most of them fall flat while some appear downright ridiculous. Uday Kiran has nothing much to do and consequently doesn’t grab much attention. Raj Kapoor as the brother of heroine Diya is an assistant commissioner and also doubles up as the director of the film. Diya flits in and out of songs and scenes making no qualms about the fact that she is there only for the glamour, a job that she has done boldly. But if anyone from the cast has left a mark it is Riyaz Khan. The actor hasn’t been getting roles worth his talent of late but he impresses here, especially with his fury and emotion.

Technically, Vambuchanda rises above what a mediocre masala movie generally delivers. Bulk of the credit for this should go to V.T.Vijayan’s editing, with the camera not doing too badly either. Music doesn’t offer much except for one number, Thaal Thiravai by Jyothsna and Naresh Iyer that stands out. Directorially, Raj

Kapoor’s effort lacks in vision and attention to detail. There are certain glaring errors that appear a bit amateurish and should not be seen in a movie of this budget. Also care should have been taken to avoid meaningless clichés like the costumes worn by women at the Ayurvedic resort in Kerala where the final part of the movie takes place.

As in any such movie the ending to is highly melodramatic to the point of being testing. But we have seen similar stuff before, haven’t we? On the business front, Vambuchanda is a movie clearly aimed at the smaller centers and its fate will be judged only once it percolates down to the B and C screens.

Followed by the consequent success of Thulluvadho Ilamai, Kadhal Kondaen and Thiruvilaiyadal, RK Productions continues its venture on production line with Yaaradi Nee Mohini. This flick is a remake of Selvaraghavan’s Telugu movie Adavari Mattulakku Arthale Vaeru that had Venkatesh, Trisha Krishnan and Srikanth in lead roles. The film happened to be one of the great blockbusters of the last year and now expectations are same with the remake version. The film has Dhanush, Nayanthara and Kanda Naal Mudhal fame Karthik in the lead roles and is directed by R Jawahar who worked with Selvaraghavan as assistant director.

Well, Selvaraghavan takes care of story, screenplay and dialogues for this film and this is the 4th time brother duo combos Selva-Dhanush are collaborating. Nayanthara glued with the success of Billa is looking more energetic shooting for this film and the most sensational buzz in the sets is that both seems to have shared good rapport. Also Jawahar has stated that on-screen chemistry between Dhanush and Nayanthara has come out well. K. Viswanath, Raghuvaran, Karunaas, Manobala, Sugumari, Rajalakshmi, Vanitha, Crane Manohar, Saranya Mohan perform important roles and Ragasya trips her foot for a song…

Dhanush plays the role of Vasu working as a trainee in a software consultancy and Raghuvaran plays his father role. Speaking about the film, Director Jawahar has stated that performance of Dhanush is extra-ordinary in all aspects including comedy, romance, action and sentiments. Also added that his combination with Raghuvaran on the screen would be enjoyed by all…

Nayanthara plays the role of Keerthi, a team leader in the same office where Vasu works as a trainee. Karthik after the success of Kanda Naal Mudhal and Vaanam Vasapadum performs supporting role in this film. Majority portion of the film has been shot in Chennai and few songs in foreign locations. In recent times, this will be the only film shot in various foreign locations.

DHAAM DHOOM

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

Banner: Dr. Murali Manohar, Sunanda Murali Manohar
Producer: Media One Global (P) Ltd – Metro Films
Story, Screenplay, Dialogues and Direction: Jeeva.
Star-casts: Jeyam Ravi, Kangna Raut, Lakshmi Rai, Chetan and few others.
Music: Harris Jayaraj
Lyrics: Pa.Vijay and Na. Muthukumar
Editing: VT Vijayan

Late Director Jeeva had held the credits of making films with different storylines like 12B, Ullam Ketkume and Unnale Unnale. His last venture is Dhaam Dhoom a gripping action thriller featuring Jayam Ravi, Lakshmi Rai and Kangna Raut in lead roles. The film is about a house surgeon played by Jayam Ravi who heads for a five day trip to Russia for Medical conference. Over there, he has to get trapped by unexpected trouble that makes him run for his life.

Well versed in Tamil and English, he has no use of these languages as Russia is a land where English never enters. Troubled with problematic situation, he has Lakshmi Rai to come for his rescue who is a practicing lawyer in Russia. Usually, in many of Tamil flicks we have seen songs being shot at foreign locations, but that’s completely different in Dhaam Dhoom. Reason over is that with the entire film shot in Russia, songs have been filmed at different locations in India. Apart from Moscow, other portions of the film have been canned at Pollachi, Hyderabad, Coorg, Thenkasi and Nellai.

Kangna Raut performs female leading role with the character of an active village girl reading who is a diehard fan of Sidney Sheldon novels. Screenplay has been designed entirely different that will let audiences to move to edge of their seats. Cinematography by Jeeva has been done in super 35 mm format. S. Ramakrishnan has written dialogues in the film. Harris Jayaraj scores music for the lyrical lines written by Pa. Vijay and Na. Muthukumar. VT Vijayan is the editor while Raju Sundaram and Rekha Chinni Prakash have choreographed songs.

Kanal Kannan has directed stunts for the entire film along with Greece Anderson and Thyagarajan… The film was slated to release for Pongal but due to some problems couldn’t make it up and will soon see the lights of tunnel… As Director Jeeva breathed his last, his wife Aneez is wielding megaphone to complete the film and PC Sriram will take care of camera works…

Robot

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

Cast – Shah Rukh Khan
Director – Shankar
Producer – Gauri Khan, Shah Rukh Khan [Red Chillies Entertainment]
Cinematography – K V Anand
Art Direction – Sabu Cyril

Shankar’s regular screenplay writer Sujatha has written this script, as one of his short stories titled En Iniya Iyandhira, is the inspiration for Robot.

The story is reportedly based on a sci-fi film called THX 1138, which was written and directed by George Lucas in 1971. THX 1138 is set in a futuristic scenario where robots suppress the human race and control their emotions. THX 1138 is the name of a factory worker who falls in love with his roommate and breaks the law. He gets jailed, but when he discovers that his roommate is pregnant with his child, they escape and fight back the robots. The script also had references to George Orwell’s literary classic 1984. Robot is also speculated to be one of the costliest films to be made in Indian cinema. So excited is SRK about the project that he has put all his other projects on hold. He will start shooting for the film after Om Shanti Om releases.

The film will also boast of never-seen-before special effects in Indian Cinema as Shah Rukh now has the best in-house special effects team.

Director Simbudeven is back again with one more film! The title ‘Arai Enn 305-il Kadavul’of the film it self has created much anticipation. After the success of the blockbuster comedy ‘Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi’ this film has also created a lot of expectations among the Tamil audience. The film was shot for around two months around the city, Bangalore and Tenkasi. ‘Arai Enn 305-il Kadavul’ is produced by Director Shankhar’s ‘S’ Pictures which also produced ‘Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi’. The music director of ‘Arai Enn 305-il Kadavul’ is Vidyasagar. He has given five different varieties of songs which includes rap, western, a folk song with the smell of the Tamil soil, melody and also a remix. Our sources believe that the songs of this film will sell like hot cakes!

The two lead roles of ‘Arai Enn 305-il Kadavul’, Santhanam & Kanja Karuppu were made to sit on the parapet of the tallest building. The guys who enacted the roles seemed to heave a sigh of relief once the take was ok!

It  is also believed that the makers of the film ‘Arai En 305il Kadavul’ have made authentic costumes and brought special wigs & make-up materials from Mumbai for the character of ‘Maha Vishnu’ played by Prakash Raj.

The art Director Selvakumar has successfully re-created a moon at AVM studios that was required for the film ‘Arai En 305il Kadavul’, where a song was shot with Santhanam & Kanja Karuppu dancing on the surface of the moon!

‘Arai En 305il Kadavul’ too has historical sequences like in ‘Imsai Arasan..’

Santhanam and Kanja Karuppu, who are the heroes of ‘Arai En 305il Kadavul’ have decided not to act in any other film before this flick gets over.

‘Arai En 305il Kadavul’ has a huge star cast which includes Prakash Raj, Santhanam, Kanja Karuppu, Madhumitha, & Jyothirmayi in principal characters and also includes Rajesh,  Ilavarasu, M.S.
